what's coming up...

At the moment I'm completing work undertaken at Kelvin Grove Secondary College in Brisbane that has involved the coming together of around 60 yr 7 students from 5 local primary schools and a group of artists for a short term Artist-in-Residency project.

My group worked on the theme of Seeds and Biodiversity... and was held over 4 afternoon sessions from July to September. The students were remarkably responsive and had more time been possible deeper responses would have flowed quite easily.

The resources to run extra-curricular programs like this involves considerable organisation/funding by the lead school, Kelvin Grove Secondary College's Art + Design staff ... so it is a privilege to be asked along to play a part.

In thinking how to use available time I focused on giving a series of presentations offering a wide-sweeping picture of seeds across time and place throughout Millennia. Various forms of visual stimulus were also shared with students, including material from my own studio practice plus samples of work from two artists I chose to focus on.

This image provided the basis of the idea for the visual work I wanted to create with my group. Given the final outcome was a large work for exhibition at an School Event in late October I was keen to find an approach that would both hold appeal for students and hopefully provide impact when exhibited.

Pictured above is Claudia, a student from my afternoon classes in 2011. Behind her is the "wallpaper" for a presentation I did at a Sustainability Day held in August that year. Here Claudia points to her drawing of a Mahogany seed pod photocopied in positive and negative formats. I've long been drawn to 'text as art' and using word and image to make works.

Hence we explored the work of Australian based NZ painter Robert McPherson:

and much loved NY artist Keith Haring who blazed through the world in the 80's before leaving this planet far too soon due to Aids.

What these images have in common is a simple graphic linear black and white approach... perfect for a crowded class room where time is limited and visual impact is neccesary!

Here are the first results on week 2 of the program.

seeds + pods I took in to show students

It took time each week spelling out the complex issues around seeds at this time in history to give students something adequate to work with. My intention was to make sure that any slogans being created in this exercise were coming from an introduction to the multi-faceted story of seeds, the layers and issues and politics and cultural histories. Not every student took that on board but there were those who did have some knowledge on which to build these sessions., with one student in particular on course to become a plant scientist who frequently contributed quite stunning information and ideas to the lessons.

Yesterday I spent time in the afternoon at the school touching up the work and getting ready to create boards for the exhibition. I like these two boards placed together  here:

More on this soon!

Meanwhile, in the new Studio I've been working flat-out whenever possible getting ready for the Studio Launch on November 23 which I will open to the public that weekend with a small exhibit of new work for sale.

I wrote an extensive post on this at my Visual Eclectica blog this week... take a peak at new work and read about the ideas behind the new Studio venture: Seed. Art. Lab : read here!

in the new Studio

I've just reached that satisfying stage of feeling as though I've been in this studio for ages. It's remarkably disorienting trying to work in a studio space missing that certain energy field that comes from long, productive hours inhabiting the work space. Even though its still early days here and I've not spent all that much time painting since the set up about 4 weeks ago there's a satisfyingly dense lived-in feeling present here now.

Key to that was, in part, having people visit here... sparking some great conversations ... and the 4 hour class I held Saturday for two young students with a keen sense of curiosity for the natural world... the first of many I hope!

Assembling books and materials before the class started.

Sophie and Jackson mid afternoon.

One of Jackson's numerous drawings... he's spent a great deal of time in Botanic Gardens, National Parks and anywhere he can engage with the natural world ever since he was very young thanks to his parents willingness to enable this contact. His memory and understanding of plants, seeds, eco-systems etc is stunning ... and made for some excellent discussion through the day.

One thing discussed at length were issues around Biodiversity. It was a most rewarding experience to find two students, Jackson at 12 and Sophie at 9, so keen to take part in an intensive workshop that extended over 4 and a half hours, with lunch consumed at the work table so keen they were to keep going!

I look forward to running many more workshops along this line in time to come.

I'm presently cooking up ideas for a project within my project... ready for November when i wish to launch my new studio. I've found a way to combine several passions into one idea which i will announce when the time comes.

These are a new development in my studio practice ... Biodiversity Conversation Plates ... part of a whole concept to be launched November. Hand-painted they one-off unique works and promise to be an affordable art option which I'm really enjoying creating and have broad application in people's homes, work-places and more.

Stay tuned for more on this in the lead up to the Studio launch in November.

If interested in Classes or more information on whats going on send an email and I will put you in the picture.

Cheerio!

The Inspiration Garden, Morningside , Brisbane

Yesterday I spent the morning in this wonderful garden set up by Andrew and Nancy Kent.

I added an album on my Facebook page here!

Great story on the Inspiration garden at a growing venture: EDIBLE YARDS

Nancy was one of the speakers at the recent Biodiversity Dialogue events I held in conjunction with my February Exhibition. She gave a short talk on the project and how it is set up to include community and function over time.

Text from EDIBLE YARDS POST:

The Inspiration Garden is a neighbourhood permaculture garden situated near the Seven Hills bushland, Brisbane. The Inspiration Garden began when Nancy and Andrew Kent decided to take a small step towards a more sustainable lifestyle by creating a place where all are welcome to make friends and learn about sustainable lifestyle and permaculture.
The garden is now well established with a great following of volunteers supporting, growing and developing the garden, with over 600 people paying a visit to the garden since it’s creation in October 2010.
Nancy Says “Our volunteering program is unique as each volunteer works one on one beside an experienced gardener. We tailor the volunteering session to the needs of the volunteer. There is always so much to do around the garden that there is a wide variety of activities to choose from. If it is raining we do indoor activities like seed saving and packaging.”
Nancy holds educational courses and workshop sessions which include organic gardening and soil creation, what weeds and pests are saying to us, sustainable eco gardening, how to grow food in pots, Awakening the Dreamer Symposiums, film evenings, neighbourhood garden cook ups and Inspiring the Heart reflection sessions.

All are invited to contact the gracious hosts of this venture to participate in workshops on offer or in volunteering and learning more about the project. Lateral thinkers that they are ... there are many ways community are able to benefit and contribute to the life if this project.

Our encouragement and support for such ventures is paid back in so many ways. I hope you find a chance to visit sometime if in this region.

Thanks for a wonderful time Nancy and Andrew!

I'll be back soon!
